Oneida County Partners with AFRL, Griffiss Institute and SUNY Poly in $12M Open Innovation Campus

ROME NY — On Monday, August 26, Oneida County Executive Anthony J. Picente Jr. announced the development of the Open Innovation Campus, a partnership with the Air Force Research Laboratory Information Directorate, the Griffiss Institute and SUNY Polytechnic Institute that will create a $12 million research center at Griffiss International Airport.

“The Griffiss Institute is extremely excited to be part of this new project. The GI has a mission to bring together the Air Force Research Laboratory, Industry and Academia to facilitate and grow the technology base in the Utica/Rome area,” says Bill Wolf, president of Griffiss Institute. “Since 2008, the GI has been under contract ‘to provide services to AFRL/RI that increase the likelihood of success in the conduct of cooperative or joint activities’. Now under this new Open Innovation Campus the GI will establish a world-class collaborative facility.”

“The concept is focused on creating an ecosystem to discover, innovate, and develop technology advancement through an innovative entrepreneurial culture and environment,” continues Wolf, “It will be a place where researchers from around the world can join the Air Force, DOD, government, industry, small and large businesses, and academia collaborating to solve cutting edge technical information and cyber problems right here in the Mohawk Valley.”
