Data Privacy Day Champion

ROME, NY — Griffiss Institute has announced its commitment to Data Privacy Day ‒ an international effort held annually on January 28 to create awareness about the importance of respecting privacy, safeguarding data, and enabling trust – by signing on as a Data Privacy Day 2019 Champion. As a Champion, Griffiss Institute recognizes and supports the principle that organizations, businesses, and government, all share the responsibility of being conscientious stewards of personal information.

Data Privacy Day is part of a greater campaign that promotes awareness of the importance of privacy, highlights easy ways to protect personal information and reminds organizations that privacy is good for business. This year, Data Privacy Day is encouraging everyone to “Own Your Privacy” by learning more about how to help protect the valuable data that is online. One simple thing you can do is to update your privacy settings by using a helpful tool created by the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA).

“Over the last decade, we have witnessed a rise in the sophistication and scale of traditional attacks. Breaches will continue, hackers will become more advanced, their tools will only improve, and the stakes for everyone are extremely high. Currently the cybercrime-as-a-service economy is stronger than ever,” explains Bill Wolf, Griffiss Institute president. “Millions of people are unsuspecting of, and uneducated, about how their personal information is being used, collected or shared in the digital world. The best way to fight cybercriminals is through education and that can start at any age and needs to start now. Data Privacy Day enables individuals and companies to take action.”

As part of Griffiss Institute’s Data Privacy Day efforts, throughout the month of January, the organization will post data privacy tips and reminders on all their social media profiles, as well as the Griffiss Institute website, take part in online safety awareness Twitter Chats, and display materials throughout the Griffiss Institute office building, that display the importance of privacy and protecting personal information.

In North America, the Data Privacy Day initiative is officially led by the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA), a nonprofit, public-private partnership dedicated to promoting a safer, more secure and more trusted internet. You can also follow NCSA on Facebook and Twitter for updates and resources and use the official hashtag #PrivacyAware to join the conversation.
